The extruded gear case has flanges where the tine shaft enters the transmission. The shields help prevent wire, vines, and other hazards from entering transmission. Sturdy design cannot prevent all problems, but a Maxim tiller's transmission can be opened for repair.
Maxim's commitment to rental ease is also found in the simple to maintain design. Belts, tines, transmission, and engine are all easy to access and service. Check fluids and filters, tighten loose bolts as necessary, and hose off the dirt and the tiller is ready to rent again.
